The Golden Smile

Your Guide in Sharm El Sheikh

The Golden Smile

Everywhere you go there are grumpy people and there are the smiling ones. One of the best and most fascinating things I found in Egypt is that smiling people come in large numbers. Even after the revolution, some of them just can’t stop smiling (not that we would want them to, anyway).

I would like to talk about this young man whose name I never got (I’m near-sighted, so I can’t see his name tag). He is a waiter at one of Sharm el-Sheikh’s five star resorts.
For the past two and a half years, I have never seen him without a big grin. He appears to be a genuinely happy person. Every time I pass his workpost, he waves at me and calls out my name. Smiling, of course.

So this article is dedicated to a person who – I’m sure – has an important, yet so commonly neglected, role of making people around him feel comfortable, at ease and – yes, smiling. Because you have to agree, a smile is the most contageous thing that knows no language barrier.

I wonder if his bosses dare to recognise the value of such an employee, will he ever get promoted to, say, a manager position because he did such a great job?
Either way, this is a token of my gratitude for the many times I was given a dose of simple honest positivity.

So… I challenge you to smile today and make somebody else’s day a little bit better.
