Camel racing track to be established in Sharmel-Sheikh
SOUTH SINAI, Egypt: A four-kilometer track is planned to be established to host international camel racing competitions in Sharm el-Sheikh, Gamal Mahdy, the head of the project, said Thursday.
The track is designed to be 50-meters wide with a capacity of 1,500 spectators, Mahdy said, adding that it would be surrounded with restaurants, lounges, bazaars, and Bedouin gift shops.
Governor of South Sinai Khaled Fouda allocated 2 million EGP ($290,000) for the project, and the Ministry of Tourism will contribute two million more.
Tourism in the area has sharply declined after the revolution in 2011, and some countries have banned travelling to Egypt in light of attacks perpetrated by militant groups in North Sinai following the ouster of President Mohamed Morsi in July 2013.
