Egypt Boosts Global Tourism With New Sustainability Initiatives And Eco-Friendly Projects In Sharm El Sheikh And Hurghada

Egypt’s Tourism Ministry is set to double tourist arrivals with bold sustainability initiatives, eco-friendly projects, and strategic investments to reshape the industry.

Yomna Elbahar, Vice Minister of Tourism and Antiquities in Egypt, highlighted that sustainability is a fundamental aspect of the ministry’s strategy to boost international tourism while preserving the nation’s natural resources and heritage sites.

The ministry is spearheading two significant initiatives to transform Sharm El Sheikh and Hurghada into eco-friendly tourism hubs. Additionally, a public-private partnership approach has been adopted to enhance tourism services at archaeological sites and museums, improving both sustainability and service standards.

Elbahar also underscored the importance of partnering with international organizations such as UNDP, USAID, and the Cairo office of UNESCO. These partnerships focus on protecting archaeological sites, improving site management capabilities, and integrating renewable energy solutions within museums and tourism facilities.

A key strategic objective is to attract both foreign and domestic investments to expand the sector’s capacity and achieve sustainable tourism growth. For every 15,000 new hotel rooms, approximately two billion Egyptian pounds in VAT and commercial profit taxes are generated.
