Sharm El-Sheikh Arab and European Film Festival merges art and tourism: Governor

Headed by director Samir Seif, the festival will run for six days in early March

The first Sharm El-Sheikh Arab and European Film Festival is an event that aims to merge art, film, music and tourism. The festival, headed by director Samir Seif, will run from 5 to 11 March, postponed from its initially planned start date of February.

During a visit of the festival’s organisers to Sharm El-Sheikh, South Sinai governor Khaled Fouda assured of the governorate’s keenness to facilitate the organisation of the festival and to ensure its success as a means of promoting art and encouraging tourism.

Fouda added that the governorate will offer support in accommodating guests at hotels, providing screening halls for the films, as well as organising music concerts that will take place during the festival, in addition to tours to acquaint guests with Sharm El-Sheikh, according to a report by Al-Ahram Arabic.

The festival is organised by the Noon Foundation for Culture and Arts (NOONCA), which is headed by Mohamed Kamel El-Qaliouby.

Journalist Gamal Zayda, NOONCA’s secretary-general and a member of its board of trustees, stated that the opening and closing ceremonies of the festival promise many surprises, and will be organised in coordination with Sharm El-Sheikh’s touristic facilities.

NOONCA’s board of trustees decided to move the Luxor Arab and European Film Festival, which they also organise, to Sharm El-Sheikh, as Luxor is already the host of another film festival, while Sharm El-Sheikh has none.

The festival’s promotional poster and marketing materials were designed by prolific artist Nagy Shaker, and pay homage to Sharm El-Sheikh’s rich underwater landscape and its reputation as a top diving spot.

According to Al-Ahram Arabic, the festival has sent out international invitations and announcements to a number of countries, especially those whose citizens frequent Sharm El-Sheikh, such as Russia, Belarus and Germany.
