A New blue o two ‘HAYAH’ Reef Clean-up Season Begins…
It’s that time of year again and blue o two’s annual ‘HAYAH’ Reef Clean-up season has begun. blue o two will now be running reef clean-up safaris in the North of the beautiful Red Sea in support of marine conservation and HEPCA’s ‘HAYAH’ campaign throughout the winter months.
‘HAYAH’, meaning ‘life’ in Arabic, is HEPCA’s most ambitious environmental project yet, aiming to involve all sections of the Red Sea community to work towards; raising awareness, education and responsibility and active participation. The blue o two ‘HAYAH’ Reef Clean-up safaris follow a North & Ras Mohamed route and focus on ‘problem reefs’ in the Northern Red Sea. In addition to evening seminars on reef conservation, two to three clean-ups will take place during the week – allowing an opportunity for divers to get involved and make a real contribution to the preservation of this unique ecosystem.
The season kicked off on the 13th December 2013 with the first ‘HAYAH’ Reef Clean-up trip taking place onboard blue o two’s flagship liveaboard vessel, M/Y blue Horizon. With 26 fantastic volunteers, the week ended with a litter collection amounting to 8 full sacks weighing in at 30kg. The volunteers found a lot of rubbish, especially at Abu Nuhas, including shisha pipes, bottles, plumbing supplies and even a miniature Christmas tree complete with baubles!
Last year’s ‘HAYAH’ Reef Clean-up season saw a total litter collection of 265kg and so with the rest of the winter season to go, blue o two aim to help HEPCA in their mission to keep the Red Sea as clean as possible.
