Ancient Egyptian Food
The climate dictated the kind of food that formed a part of ancient Egyptian cuisine. Bread was a major part of this cuisine. This bread was exclusively prepared from emmer wheat. At times, barley was also used. An interesting fact remains to be that bread was available in 30 different shapes. From the round bread called as pita, there was also bread that was baked in the shapes of animals or birds. At times, this bread also included some healthy fillings. This can be named to be the first signs of sandwich seen out here! Bread was often eaten along with vegetables. This included celery, lettuce, cucumber, scallions etc.
Garlic was also used predominantly. Ancient Egyptian food also included pulses, chickpeas, cabbages, turnips, lentils and beans. Sometimes, vegetables such as celery were eaten raw. Fruits also formed an important part of ancient Egyptian cuisine. Grapes were the most popular amongst all. The ancient Egyptians also ate figs and dates.
Meat was one of the other sources of food for the ancient Egyptians. They ate meat of birds such as the geese, ducks, quails or even the partridge. Poultry thus proved to be of utmost importance for Egyptian cuisine. The meat of sheep and goats was also used for mealtimes. Mutton, however, remained within the reach of few. People from affluent families had access to include mutton or even fish in their diet.
Beer was the main drink in ancient Egypt. Beer at that time was quite different from what is available now. In the ancient days, this beer had certain nutritious elements. It was prepared from the crops of barley. Spices were added to bring a different flavor to this very important beverage. Dates and grapes were used to prepare wine. This was however, within the reach of the rich families only.

Cooking in ancient Egypt was usually done over open fire. Food would be baked, roasted, fried or boiled before it was consumed. The ancient Egyptians also used clay ovens for cooking. Sugar was something that was not really known to the ancient Egyptians. Honey was used as a sweetener where as the poor used dates as a way to sweeten food.
Spices that were native to the land of Egypt were white and black cumin, fennel, mint, fenugreek and thyme. The rest were imported from outside regions. Archaeologists have found certain utensils that indicate about the life led back then. The common folk used clay dishes where as the rich used utensils made of bronze and silver. Findings revealed the ancient Egyptians used storage bowls, pots and pans for preparing and storing food.
Today, dishes such as Ful Medames or the Molokhia best represent Egyptian cuisine. Bread still remains to be an important feature of ancient Egyptian food. Life during the ancient Egypt certainly did have interesting stories to unfold. It is no wonder; Egypt has a mysterious aura around it since the ancient days!
