My 4 Top Diving Spots In Sharm El Sheikh
When visiting Sharm El Sheikh, one of the most important essentials that you have to bring with you is a diving and at least snorkeling gear, or perhaps you can rent some at one of the many diving shops that exist in the centre of Sharm El Sheikh. This is because the crystal clear waters of the Red Sea near Sharm, have a profusion of live coral reefs and numerous shipwrecks; where the abundance of the marine flora and fauna will take your breath away.
For those of you who are not yet divers this place will introduce you to a whole new world under the sea. Anyone visiting Sharm El Sheikh needs a guide to the the best spots, I have made a list of some of my favorite local diving spots. I hope it will be of help to you when you visit this beautiful area.
Jackson Reef
Jackson Reef is in the Strait of Tiran where divers swarm to explore its dazzling display of fishes and aquatic creatures. You can only reach this dive spot via boat, which you moor in the sheltered part of the reef at the southern end, then you can swim over to the northern side where you can see the wreck of the Lara and be amazed at the profusion of different coloured corals and bright red sea anemones. During summer, one of the favorite sights for divers who make the trip to this reef is the school of hammerhead sharks which frequent the area in this particular season. The dive is only for those using scuba since snorkel boats were banned some time ago.
Ras Za’atar
One reason why I cannot forget this site is because it is here where I have seen the most live dolphins while I am underwater. This diving spot is located in the southern part of the Marsa Bareika in Ras Mohammed. You cannot avail of a boat moored here so your dive typically starts at the south where you will swim or drift towards the north with the wall on your right side. In this dive, you will come across a spectacular table coral with wonderful gorgonian fan hiding underneath. The place abounds with fish of all types including species of glass fishes and the very beautiful Napoleon Wrasse, there are also often many turtles, Jackfish and barracuda swimming past.
Ras Ghamilla
On the northern part of the Tiran Strait is the Ras Ghamilla beacon that marks the turning point for all shipping, path on the way to the reef where schools of gorgonian fans dominate the diverse undersea life. Perhaps diving in this particular site is appropriate for beginners because the dive here is not too deep and the current not too strong and the coral is quite spectacular.
Shark and Yolanda
Beginning this dive at anemone city and drifting with the current across shark reef and onto Yolanda is probably the best way to experience this area. The colors and vibrant fish life make this one of the most popular and best dives in the area. It is not unusual to see hundreds of pelagic fish in vast schools such as barracuda and bat-fish. The wreckage of the Yolanda is within easy reach and makes for a great finish to the dive. This dive usually requires some degree of open water experience.
Naama Bay Itself.
This is a spot that is so overlooked for just a quite time underwater with lots to see and so easy to get to and get into the water is Naama Bay itself. It’s great to be able just to completely relax with friends and others who are maybe not such experienced divers and show them and enjoy yourself.
Regardless of your experience level or adventure threshold any trip to the South Sinai should not be completed without some diving in and around Sharm El Sheikh.
