“How do I protect my hair from sun damage?”
This is the question I have received on many occasions whilst living in Sharm. Most of us protect our skin from the harmful UV rays from the sun but why not hair?

Ultra-violet (UV) light penetrates the hair shaft and damages its structure, just as it does to skin, leaving your hair damaged, duller, weaker and less elastic. This is also the most common way to lose pigment in your hair, breaking it down, bleaching it and reducing the hair’s natural defense system.

So what about chlorine or sea water?
Well Chlorine can make the cuticle of the hair rough so it looks less shiny and, if it’s longer, it can get very tangly. But most important, if the hair is light and porous, it can soak up the copper from the chlorinated water leaving the hair with a greenish tinge!
Sea water on the other hand interacts with your hair in a different way. It removes all natural moisture from the hair leaving it feeling rough, dehydrated, dry and sometimes causing damage to the cuticles.
Rinsing or shampooing your hair soon after leaving the water will help.

So how can I protect my hair from the sun?
Products with UV filters or sunscreens for the hair do offer some protection. Just like skin products, you need to reapply them regularly to keep the protection constant. The best protection available is wearing a hat or scarf, and avoid exposure when the sun is highest and most damaging – between the hours of 11am and 3pm.
Conditioning products can help repair and prevent further damage. And using a leave in conditioner once leaving the water will replace some of the lost moisture. Reconditioning treatments used once a week will help any further damage to your hair if cared for like your skin.
